No, it is comfortable to front carry with the crossed strap configuration without the strap-covers. However, comfort is a very subjective issue, that is why this option is available for those (of a size 40 and more) who wish to avoid having the webbing in direct contact with the lower back, depending on their body-type.

The Cloud strap covers are very easy to attach, thanks to the pressure button and velcros.
