How to dress baby when babywearing
Dressing baby safely while carrying, whether it's cold or hot, the key word is mobility!
Everyone has their own solution, just be sure to follow these golden rules:
- Check the baby's correct physiological position
- Make sure that the baby's feet are not under tension
- Make sure the airways are clear.
- Make sure the baby is comfortable
Important :
One layer of fabric for a carrier = one layer of fabric for a garment.
In cold weather
The babywearing coat!
It covers the baby completely, which is ideal for not having to take them out of the carrier when we're warm inside! It might seem like a frivolous purchase, easily dismissed, but you realize that by removing the inserts, the coats are still usable! Even after the baby is no longer being carried!
Pssst, @mamalila makes some amazing ones!
- The babywearing cover!
They offer the same advantages as their cousin, the coat; it's up to you to find the one that will fit over your coat! The added bonus is that both parents can use it without having to buy two!
- The combination
A timeless classic… The sherpa snowsuit*, ideal for these snowy and cold days to keep baby warm and cozy! Dressed in style and safe!
* Make sure to choose a size larger than your wetsuit to avoid tension and achieve a physiological position
- Babywearing gaiters!
A small tool much appreciated by parents, they allow us to put footless pants/sleeves on our little ones while keeping their feet and calves nice and warm.
- Wool!
I have a soft spot for merino wool… It doesn’t itch, it’s fine and it’s thermoregulating, just like linen!
There is no such thing as bad weather, only solutions to face this winter cold!
In hot weather

- A layer of fabric in a baby carrier is equivalent to a layer of clothing. Depending on the thickness of your carrier, it can replace the equivalent of a light bodysuit or a light undershirt. So, when it's warm, there's no need to add a bodysuit for your baby; you can dress them directly in a diaper/coverage inside the carrier.
Protecting baby:
-
With your baby's legs exposed, you will need to protect them from the sun's rays; you can use sunscreen with an SPF of 50, cotton or merino wool leg warmers.
-
A hat, to avoid getting sunstroke.
-
Small sunglasses to avoid being dazzled
What method of carrying?

Opt for baby carriers made of cotton or linen. Choose breathable and/or thermoregulating materials.
Hydrate baby
Whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, it is important to ensure that baby is regularly hydrated; do not hesitate to take regular breaks and change baby's position in their carrier.
Babywearing
Carrying your baby in hot weather helps regulate their body temperature (much better than if they were placed on something synthetic).
However, we recommend that you do not go out during peak hours.
