Physiological babywearing involves carrying your baby while fully respecting their physiology and natural development. At birth, an infant's spine is not yet fully formed, and their muscles are not yet strong enough to support their head and back independently. Physiological babywearing therefore respects the child's natural posture, taking into account their age, muscle tone, spinal maturation, pelvic tilt, and level of alertness.
Unlike rigid systems, physiological carrying is an adjustable method that adapts to the baby's growth . It supports the back without restricting or pressing it against the skin, allows for a natural rounded back and a raised leg position, which is beneficial for proper hip development.
Physiological carrying also respects essential safety rules : the baby is carried in a vertical position, the airways are always clear (face visible, chin free, head not buried) and the support is sufficient to avoid a back that is too rigid or, on the contrary, slumped.
This type of babywearing can be practiced from birth , whether the baby is born full-term or prematurely, provided that a suitable carrier is used. Physiological babywearing evolves with the child's growth and must be adjusted to their weight and height, as well as the parent's abilities.

The 3 physiological carrying positions
Every parent has their favorite! But what is the purpose of these carrying positions and in what situations should they be used?
The prone position
The most common position, especially at the beginning. Baby is held against you and feels safe. Your scent soothes them, as do the sounds of your heartbeat, which they can perceive more easily this way, reminding them of their time in the womb. This physiological carrying position is perfect for newborns.
The sideways position
Often used with a sling. Practical for breastfeeding or for curious but still small babies!
The supine position
Ideal as baby grows. It's comfortable for the parent and ergonomic for the child. This carrying position is perfect for longer outings like hikes and allows baby to naturally hold onto their parent.
A quick reminder
Is our posture towards the world physiological?
That's THE question! And no... it's not a physiological position . It overstimulates the baby and doesn't perfectly respect their posture. So use it sparingly and only for babies over 3 months old.
Tip: if baby wants to see the world, opt for the supine position, which is perfectly physiological!
